Deep Space 9 was a Cardassian built Nor-class space station that was built in orbit of Bajor.

Built by the Cardassians in orbit of Bajor and named Terok Nor. The station served as the command post for the occupation of Bajor housing the prefect. It also served as a slave mining station for uridium ore.[1][2]

After the Cardassians withdrew from Bajor they stripped the station of important systems leaving it barely functioning.[1]

In 2369, the station was transferred to the Bajorans who invited the Federation to administer the station. Commander Benjamin Sisko was assigned as the commanding officer of the renamed Deep Space 9. It was moved to the mouth of the Bajoran wormhole after its discovery and become a major hub for traffic to and from the wormhole.[1]

During the Dominion War the station was captured by the Dominion. Several months later Federation and Klingon forces recaptured the station during Operation Return.[3][4][5]

There were numerous shops and businesses located in the main thoroughfare of the station, which was known as the Promenade.

Quark's was a popular spot on the station serving as a bar, restaurant, gambling den and holosuite vendor.[6]

There was a Bajoran temple on the station, which had an orb of the Prophets.[6]

Alternate realities

In an alternate universe where the Dominion won the Dominion War, the station was handed back to the Bajorans a year after they joined the Dominion and was renamed Gateway Station. The station played second fiddle to the Dominion's Gamma 1 station on the Gamma Quadrant side of the wormhole in terms of allowing passage through the wormhole as Gateway was required to send any requests to use the wormhole to Gamma 1 for final approval.

The main recreational area on the station was Morn's Bar, Grill, Gaming House and Holosuite Arcade.

While the station was run by Bajorans the Dominion kept a small presence on the station, which included a Vorta and a platoon of Jem'Hadar.

In 2394, Colonel Antara Eri commanded the station with the Vorta Gelnon stationed there as the Dominion's representative.

In the same year, Jake Sisko was taken to the station to be questioned over his activities in the caverns of B'hala.

Jake shattered the Reckoning Tablet on the station, releasing a Prophet and the Kosst Amojan, beginning the Reckoning. The Kosst Amojan possessed Dukat, who went on a killing spree on the promenade.

The Kosst Amojan and the Prophet, using the body of Jake Sisko, had their confrontation on the promenade. The powers involved were sufficient to destroy the station if they got out of control and the station was evacuated.

Following the end of the battle between the Prophet and Kosst Amojan the wormhole opened, producing significant gravimetric distortions. They pulled the station towards the wormhole; the forces sufficient to tear the station apart.[7]
