Shuttlecraft are small, short-range vessels that often serve as auxiliary craft on starships and space stations. Some are basically equipped purely to transport personnel when transporters cannot be used, while others can be equipped with warp drive, weapons and transporters.
The Federation Starfleet categorised its shuttlecraft into three groupings, class 1, class 2 and class 3 shuttles, based on their size and capabilities.[1]
