The speed of light is the velocity light travels at in a vacuum. It is denoted by c and is equal to 299,792,458 metres/second.

Warp factor 1 is equal to the speed of light and the development of technology that allows a vessel to travel at these speeds is considered one of the major milestones in a species' technological development. Species that have yet to reach this level of technology are referred to as pre-warp civilisations.
