Starship classification is a system various militaries use to group vessels according to their design specifications. This is usually done by using the starships primary mission profile. The exact terms vary depending on the entity applying them. For example, the Federation Starfleet uses terms such as explorer and escort when referring to its starships, often shying away from more militaristic terms (as favoured by powers such as the Klingons and Romulans) such as warship, battle cruiser and dreadnought.[1]
