The United Federation of Planets (UFP or simply the Federation) was an interstellar government that spanned a region of space that straddled the border between the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. The capital of the Federation was the planet Earth.


The Federation was ruled by the Federation Council, which was presided over by the a president. The main council chambers of the council was located in Paris.


The Federation was official formed in 2161. Among the founding members were humans, Vulcans, Andorians and Tellarites. By the 2370s it had over 150 members and its territory spread across 8,000 light years.[1]

In 2267, the Federation and Klingons entered a brief conflict, which was brought to an end by the non corporeal Organians.[2]

In 2347 marked the beginning of hostilities between the Federation and Cardassian Union. The conflict would last until 2370 when a truce was finally signed between the two powers.[3][4]

In 2366, the Hyralan Incident resulted in a major diplomatic incident between the Federation and Romulan Star Empire.[5]

In 2372, the Federation and Klingon Empire went to war after the Federation refused Klingon Chancellor Gowron's demands for the Federation to abandon the Archanis sector. A ceasefire was agreed several months later after it was revealed Klingon General Martok had been replaced by a Changeling.[6][7]

In late-2373, after years of tensions the Dominion War began pitting the Federation and Klingons against the Dominion and Cardassian Union.[8]

Alternate universe

In an alternate universe, following the unsuccessful Operation Return the Federation was quickly overwhelmed by the Dominion.[9]
